Good dental care doesn’t just happen in a dental office. It starts at home. There are everyday things you can do to show you care for your teeth and gums that will improve your oral health.
Dental Care at Home
- Just like your mom told you, don’t forget to brush your teeth. From electric toothbrushes, to the traditional brush, there is still a right way and a wrong way to brush your teeth. It is important to brush teeth long enough, and to clean all the surfaces of each tooth. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, the average person only brushes for 45 to 70 seconds a day while the recommended amount of time is 2-3 minutes, twice a day. Each one of your teeth is uniquely yours and uniquely shaped. Think of each tooth as its own Mount Everest with many valleys, crevices, peaks and faces. It is important to remember that our teeth are not flat surfaces. Take your time to brush them accordingly. That being said, be careful not to brush them too hard or too long which wears down enamel.
- Don’t forget your tongue! Even you are a faithful tooth brusher, if you don’t brush your tongue, you leave bacteria in your mouth that contribute to bad breath! Starting at the back of your tongue, brush it back and forth, and then side to side. Finish the process by rinsing with water. Some may prefer a tongue scraper instead of a toothbrush. If you decide to finish with a rinse of antibacterial mouthwash, make sure to follow the instructions on the bottle for it to be the most effective.
- If you brush and stop there, you miss cleaning 35% of your teeth! Just like icebergs are bigger under the water than above, your gums hide areas of your teeth that toothbrushes miss. Flossing not only helps keep your teeth free from decay, but also helps keep your gums healthy. Floss picks and other dental products make it so easy to floss there really is no excuse for skipping this vital step of your home dental care routine. Once you’re done, you can do the simple “tongue test.” Slide your tongue across the surfaces of your teeth (especially near the gums) and see if they feel smooth and clean. It is an informal way to see if you are adequately cleaning your pearly whites!
